Team GB sailors Anna Burnet and John Gimson were left ‘devastated’ after being denied an early wedding present in the form of an Olympic medal.
The pair, who are planning to get married shortly after the games in Paris, finished fourth in the mixed multihull event.
They went into Thursday’s medal race third in the overall standings and while gold was out of reach they had a great shot at winning silver or bronze.

But disaster struck just seconds into the race when officials deemed they had crossed the starting line before the starting horn had sounded.
They were disqualified from the race soon after, with Burnet visibly distressed by the situation, and as a result scored a maximum 22 points. In sailing, the fewer the points the better.
