EAS & NOAA Radios better for alerts indoors | News [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. – When an emergency arises, there are many ways officials will alert the public, but it can be dangerous if you rely on only one alert system.

One alert system is the outdoor weather sirens, but those are only effective for alerting people who are outdoors.

Other methods, such as EAS Alerts on TV and NOAA Weather Radios, are more appropriate for in the home or workplace. Cell phone providers also send out messages in emergency situations and there are several local text alert systems you can sign up for.

With so many more modern ways to alert us, that bears the question: why even use the outdoor sirens?

“Those new things may not always work, but these old things like sirens and even EAS messaging, if you have TVs, those may still work,” said Alexa White, Deputy Director of Pennington County Emergency Management.
