WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and WFISD held an awareness meeting at Fowler Elementary Thursday evening.
The meeting gave parents or anyone interested a chance to know more about dyslexia and what children experience throughout the school day as they read and write.
Diann Davenport, the district’s dyslexia coordinator, said events like tonight’s are crucial for parents of children with learning disabilities.
“It‘s important for parents to know because when that child comes home from a day at school, they‘re exhausted and their parents or guardians are their comfort. Sometimes when they get home they just don‘t want to do that homework or they just don’t want to do that reading,” Davenport said, adding, “They understand what their students are feeling and can accommodate them at home, and help them through the process and be their advocate for them until they’re old enough to advocate …
