The Knoxville Police Department is urging people to drive carefully in school zones as students return to class.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department said dozens of citations have been issued so far in school zones, as students return to class across the area.

In a post on social media, the police department said officers issued 31 citations. It said 19 of those citations were for speeding, and six were warning citations. The police department said it would conduct increased, high-visibility traffic enforcement in school zones through Aug. 23, meant to make sure students can safely return to school.

Officers also urged people to drive carefully through school zones, slowing down and staying attentive as people return to class. Usually, school zone flashers start flashing 40 minutes before school starts and stop flashing five minutes after school is in session each day.

They generally require drivers to slow down to to 15 mph less than the regular posted speed limit.
