Doctors warn against viral TikTok trend on homemade sunscreen [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – A new viral trend on TikTok caught our attention, homemade sunscreen and we’re getting answers from medical experts on whether this is safe.

During the summer months, most people spend time in the sun. A recent TikTok trend has people all over social media talking, homemade sunscreen. The most popular video comes from influencer Nara smith, who has over 8 million followers. Her homemade sunscreen reaching 2 million likes.

Western Mass News spoke with Cooley Dickinson Hospital’s Dr. Sundeep Shukla about the possible dangers of homemade sunscreens using ingredients like coconut, bees wax, coco butter and zinc oxide powder.

“The most important component is zinc oxide, which you have probably heard and people use, and that’s usually not in sun screens made at home,” said Dr. Shukla.

He also points out approved sunscreens on the market work to block the ultra violet rays from the sun.
