‘District of Innovation’ program changing school start dates [Video]

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Many parents are wondering why the school year seems to be starting earlier for their children each year. Back in the day, back-to-school season was closer to Labor Day, now, for some, it’s closer to the Fourth of July. 

3NEWS spoke with two area districts about the District of Innovations program that gives them the flexibility to alter the start date of school to tailor to their community needs.

According to the Texas Education Agency website, Districts of Innovation (DOI), “a plan that allows districts to be exempt from certain sections of the Texas Education Code that inhibit the goals of the district as outlined in the locally adopted innovation plan.”
