Difficult First Day of School at Columbus Elementary Following Death of Principal | Education [Video]

UTICA, N.Y. — Principal Elizabeth Gerling of Columbus Elementary School should be leading today, but tragically, she was killed last month by her boyfriend, according to police.

Support for Gerling has been remarkably evident in the weeks following her passing.

She was known for her kindness and compassion as both a friend and a colleague.

Today marks the first day for the new superintendent of the Utica City School District, Dr. Christopher Spence, who dedicated much of his morning to Columbus Elementary School.

His focus for the day was to help kids adjust to being back at school.
