At some sporting events, fans might take home their favorite athletes’ autographs on jerseys, caps, cups or even old-school paper. At the Lumberjack Classic in Nelson County this weekend, signatures will grace something a bit more substantial and sustainable. Folks in the know call them “wood cookies.”
Jenny Phillips, sponsorship and experiential manager for Devils Backbone Brewing Company, told The Daily Progress that disks of wood sawn off logs during the competition on Friday and Saturday at Devils Backbone Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows in Roseland may be autographed by timbersports athletes and taken home by fans.
Forget balls, bats and gloves; these competitors will be wielding saws and axes, putting their precision, speed and balance to the test in the underhand chop, springboard chop, standing block chop and other events.
