Deadly crash on I-94 near Casselton [Video]

CASS COUNTY, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Icy roads and high winds are being blamed for a deadly crash on I-94 west of Casselton.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, at mile marker 318 when a semi towing a trailer attempted to slow as it approached two other vehicles that were jackknifed in the median.

As the semi slowed, the driver lost control and jackknifed. The semi’s trailer came to rest upright across both eastbound lanes of traffic.

An SUV traveling behind the semi, then hit and became wedged beneath the trailer killing the driver, identified only as a 75-year-old male.

The SUV’s passenger, identified only as a 74-year-old female, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

NDHP says the roads were icy and high winds were blowing snow which reduced visibility.

The crash remains under investigation.
