OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Residents and volunteers in East Oakland met up Friday morning along a busy corridor plagued by blight to take matters into their own hands. Neighbors said it’s been a struggle to keep families and businesses in the area.

Stephanie Allen has called East Oakland home for more than 40 years. She lives a few blocks away from MacArthur Boulevard and Myers Street where she believes illegal dumping and a nearby encampment are tarnishing her community.
“I do a lot of complaining, but I want to be part of the solution too,” said Allen.
The gathering marks District 7 Councilmember Treva Reid’s third Community Safety Task Force Day of Action and Community clean-up event in the neighborhood since June.
