Cyber breach targeted student information from Ontario schools [Video]

Three Ontario school systems say they have been victimized by a cyber attack that accessed student information.

The Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board and Durham District School Board have confirmed the breach involved software used by PowerSchool, a third-party application.

The data breach took place in late December.

All three boards have posted notices about the breach on their websites.

The notices indicate the software stores a range of student information and a limited amount of school-based staff information.

“Our cybersecurity team promptly activated our response plan, taking immediate steps to ensure that our critical systems remain operational,” says the notice by the Peel board.

The boards say they are working with PowerSchool to determine the cause and scope of the breach.
