Community leaders invest in grade school literacy in Louisiana [Video]

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Power Tools For At Risk Youth and community leaders in Monroe partnered to install book boxes at local schools.

Power Tools For At Risk Youth, Monroe City Councilman for District 4 Rodney McFarland I and Monroe City School Board Superintendent Sam Moore visited schools in the area on Monday, Dec. 16. The book boxes were sponsored by McFarland.

Officials say they wanted to give students extra support on their literacy journey.

Power Tools for at Risk Youth Officials Jordan and Samantha Roberts say, “Since the third graders are having to read on the third grade level before they proceed to the fourth grade, we knew there was a need and that we should do something about it. We knew some of the test scores were lacking and none of the schools in the city of Monroe or Ouachita Parish had any book boxes in them. So …
