Church receives award for sheltering residents after storm [Video]

The church opened up at 11 p.m. after the storm caused damage to many homes in the Bullard and Emerald Bay area, Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore said.

BULLARD, Texas — Bullard Southern Baptist Church received a Smith County Community Hero Award for offering a shelter to residents in need after severe weather struck in late May.

Smith County officials gave the award Thursday to thank the church for graciously opening its doors to shelter residents following severe weather on May 23.

The church opened up at 11 p.m. after the storm caused significant damage to many homes in the Bullard and Emerald Bay area, Smith County Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore said in a news release. 

The church worked with the American Red Cross to open the shelter, which was managed by the Smith County Chaplain Emergency Response Team.
