A team of researchers in China has developed a portable balloon-mounted photovoltaic system, offering a viable solution for emergency solar power generation in mid to high-latitude regions.

In a new study, the photovoltaic potential of 10,000 balloon-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPVS) across various latitudes was assessed.

According to researchers, BIPVSs at high latitudes showed higher average output during effective working months. Over their lifecycle, BIPVSs in selected cities can generate 480–700 GWh of power.

Additionally, these systems help reduce CO2 emissions by 696 grams per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced, highlighting their environmental benefits.
