Chicagoans will see new taxes and fees in the New Year [Video]

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicagoans won’t see an increase in their property taxes in the New Year, but they will see a slew of new taxes and fees passed in the city’s $17 billion budget.

The new taxes and fees will total to about $165 million to help close a nearly $1 billion budget gap.

The biggest tax hike in the city of Chicago’s spending plan will be on digital goods, adding about $128 million in revenue by charging more for software licenses and cloud services.

Residents will also pay more for that Netflix subscription and other cable streaming, adding about $13 million with a 1.25% percentage point tax increase for subscribers.

Additionally, getting around downtown will cost more, from parking to rideshares to using valet.

Plus, shoppers will pay 10 cents per grocery bag, up from 7 cents. Retailers will now only be able to keep one cent from each bag versus the current two cents.
