CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago Board of Education met Friday amid a presidential shake-up.
Reverend Mitchell Johnson resigned Thursday from his position as board president after dozens of controversial Facebook posts were uncovered.
Michilla Blaise was appointed chairman pro tem solely for Friday’s meeting.
“I’d just like to reaffirm this board’s commitment to inclusivity and collaboration with all stakeholders to foster a supportive learning environment,” Blaise said. “In alignment with Mayor Branond Johnson, we are dedicated to our mission of transforming Chicago’s public education system.”
Dan Goldwin with the Jewish United Fund addressed the board during the public comment period.
“Reverend Mitchell’s departure has not rid this board entirely of hostility toward Jews,” Goldwin said. “Just a few weeks ago, board member Debby Pope retweeted a message saying, ‘Zionists are not welcome in Chicago.’ Ms. Pope, 75 percent of metropolitan Chicago Jews say that Israel is essential to their Judaism.”
