Cherokee, Iowa receiving FEMA support, working to come back after floods [Video]

CHEROKEE, Iowa – More than two weeks after historic flooding in parts of northwest Iowa, communities continue to recover.

In Cherokee, the Little Sioux River swelled out of its banks and into homes and businesses. Mayor Craig Schmidt said that the town’s previous flood record was 28 feet; and their most recent flood crested at 35 feet.

Since then, the town’s emergency management has been working to pick up the pieces. Mayor Schmidt said that the city’s cleaning up as best it can, and the local landfill isn’t charging extra to take all of the trash away from the piles that have accumulated.

The town is also getting closer to having its wastewater treatment plant back up and running at its full capacity. One of the plant’s three pumps is currently operational, but they hope to soon have everything back up and running soon.
