Charlotte teacher surprised with prestigious award: ‘Humbled to say the least’ [Video]

Vanessa Smith, a first-grade teacher at Croft Community School, was surprised with the prestigious award during an assembly Wednesday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte teacher was surprised with the prestigious Milken Educator Award for creative instruction and exceptional leadership. 

The Milken Educator Award, often called the “Oscar of Teaching,” is always given to the recipient as a complete surprise. Vanessa Smith, a first-grade teacher at Croft Community School in north Charlotte, was presented the award during an assembly on Wednesday. 

Smith had no idea she’d be given the top honor when she arrived at school Wednesday, telling WCNC Charlotte it was a stunning moment. 

“I was in complete shock,” she said. “I was not expecting to hear my name. I was excited to hear the name of whoever won, but that was an awesome moment. Humbled to say the least, but definitely nerve-wracking.” 

Along with the award, Smith will receive a $25,000 cash prize.
