Charleston leaders warn of rare, dangerous flooding from Tropical Storm Debby [Video]

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – City of Charleston officials urged residents Saturday to prepare for potentially life-threatening flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.

The storm is projected to arrive in the Lowcountry Tuesday and is expected to produce rainfall totals of six to 12 inches, with maximum rainfall totals up to 18 inches, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The National Weather Service forecasts that rainfall and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Debby will begin as early as Sunday and continue through late week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are days of particular concern, though rain will persist through Friday.

City leaders stressed that the storm could cause flooding in areas that aren’t typically affected by heavy rains.
