CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A Lowcountry community member reflected on his experience as a Holocaust survivor after a new addition was made to a downtown memorial.
This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Charleston Holocaust Memorial on Marion Square. At Sunday’s event, they revealed new signage and a rededication to honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
In fact, Harry Schneider lives in Charleston and shares his story.
“When we escaped into the forest before the Germans actually arrived in our town,” Schneider says.
Schnieder was born in Poland when he fled with his family in the early years of World War II, spending two years in the forest.
“There’s a quite a bit, about a million and a half children that perished and I could’ve been one of them if we didn’t escape, you know if we didn’t escape into Russia at that time,” he says.
