Changes to college’s EMT/paramedic program draws criticism [Video]

Greenville Technical College says it is taking a new approach with its EMT and paramedic programs that, officials say, is needed to fill a shortage in the area, but the move is drawing criticism. The college announced on Friday the program, which officials said is the oldest in South Carolina, would no longer admit new students, effective immediately, adding its current model is not impacting a shortage of workers. “The changes are to fill the gap that currently exists and has actually existed for some time in the EMS, the shortage of workers, and so this is a way to address that because — and we have not really met that gap,” said Candice Lewis, the dean of the college’s School of Health Sciences.College officials say a partnership with Greenville County EMS allows students to enroll in their EMT program through its Corporate and Continuing Education division.Officials said the final …
