Champlin Park, Andover come together to remember Max Akerson [Video]

Thousands of dollars were raised off the ice to go towards cancer research and sports scholarships.

CHAMPLIN, Minn. — Orange is not a color the Champlin Park Rebels or Andover Huskies wear, but you’d never know that by looking around their game Thursday night. Hundreds of fans packed the Champlin Ice Forum as the Huskies visited the Rebels, all decked out in orange shirts, hats and ribbons – all to mourn the loss of a member of the hockey community.

Max Akerson, a goaltender for the Rebels, passed after a long battle with cancer last week, just days after his 16th birthday. Thursday’s orange out was already planned, but as a fundraiser.

Thursday night, it was a tribute.

“We’re gonna do that to honor Max, and give him the one high school start he never got,” Tom Potter, Champlin Park’s Coach, said.

Along with fans decked out in orange, both teams wore orange.
