Accounts impersonating CAL FIRE are showing up on social media platforms. These accounts are also soliciting donations from the public.
CALIFORNIA, USA — As fires continue to burn throughout Los Angeles, with recovery and relief processes rapidly taking place, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is warning the public about social media accounts impersonating the agency.
According to a press release sent from CAL FIRE on Thursday night, these fraudulent social media accounts are soliciting donations.
“CAL FIRE does not solicit donations from the public, either in person or online,” the release said.
Although CAL FIRE does not receive donations from the public, those looking to make donations to organizations claiming to support wildfire victims and first responders are encouraged to thoroughly research the organization’s validity before donating.
