City officials discussed strategies to increase safety on Beale Street.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Following Wednesday morning’s deadly attack on Bourbon St. that claimed at least 15 lives and injured dozens more, many have called attention to safety on Beale St.
The nightlife in Memphis and New Orleans are often compared to one another. Both Beale and Bourbon Streets are well-known and frequently visited throughout the year.
As Memphis and Shelby County officials reflect on the deadly incident in New Orleans, they believe that the structures and layouts of Bourbon Street and Beale Street are too different for a similar event to take place here.
“We pray for our community,” said Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery. “We’re hoping for healing, but we also pray for deliverance from the challenges we face moving forward.”
“I am deeply concerned,” Memphis City Council Chairman JB Smiley said. “And my thoughts and prayers go out to each and every person affected.”
