One professor of true crime in Boston says interest in the high-profile Karen Read murder trial demonstrates a basic facet of human nature. “People have flocked to crime ever since there were ways to access it via storytelling,” said Dr. Deborah Jaramillo, a professor at Boston University’s Film and TV Studies Program.There, she teaches a class on true crime and engages with students on the foundations of our societal fascination with crime.“True crime allows us to sort of safely walk up to intense trauma, suffering and death without having to experience it ourselves,” she said. Karen Read is a Canton, Mass. woman who was charged in the death of her police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in 2022.
