HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) is calling for new federal action to prevent deceptive media generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence from impacting elections.

“Right now, in this election cycle, artificial [intelligence] technology is in the wild west,” Blumenthal said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Blumenthal pointed to a recent example in New Hampshire, when artificial intelligence was used to create a deceptive robocall with a voice that sounded like President Joe Biden. The message discouraged Democrats from voting in the Presidential election.
“We need new legislation that requires disclosure not only in the phone calls and the texts but also in the ads that A.I. technology has been used,” Blumenthal said.
The dangers of not addressing the proliferation of readily-accessible AI tools are pronounced in an election season, Blumenthal said.
