The Dallas Black Dance Theatre is the oldest, continuously operating professional dance institution in the city but recent actions have put the company in the spotlight for everything except its scheduled performances.

According to The Dallas Black Dance Theatre, nine dancers were let go last week for “violating company policies” after posting a video online, but the dancers claim the firings were retaliation after the group voted to unionize and file a claim of unfair labor practices earlier this summer.

The video in question was posted on social media and features the dancers dancing and playfully introducing themselves to the theme song of popular 90s sitcom “Family Matters.”

A rep for DBDT says actions in the video violate terms that each member of the group had signed previously.
