On Monday, health officials announced the first confirmed death from bird flu in Louisiana.
CLINTON COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has identified a case of bird flu within the state’s domestic birds.
According to a Monday press release, the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 HPAI) was found in a backyard flock located in Clinton County. The case is the first confirmed detection of H5N1 HPAI within domestic birds in Iowa in 2025.
Officials said that eggs and other poultry products are still considered safe to eat. Anyone preparing the products is reminded to heat them to an internal temperature of 165°F.
Possible cases of bird flu must be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at 515-281-5305. Symptoms of the disease include:
- A sudden increase in bird deaths with no clinical signs
- Lack of energy and/or appetite
- Decrease in egg production
