The Anchorage School District’s ongoing “Rightsizing plan” has sparked heated debates, with one school in particular, Bear Valley Elementary. Parents, students, and community members spent Monday Night, November 4, 2024, voicing strong opposition to the school’s possible closure, citing full classrooms and emotional ties to the institution.
“I met my husband at Bear Valley in third grade,” said Hailey Wilkinson, Bear Valley Parent.
At a tense Anchorage School Board meeting, more than sixty people were signed up to testify, many expressing frustration and concern over the proposed closure. Public comment was allotted three hours, community members voiced their opinions, with the vast majority focused on Bear Valley Elementary, which is facing possible closure.
“I don’t understand why my school, which is 70% full of kids, would be the first to close,” said one Bear Valley Elementary student.
