The 19-year-olds’ families touched down with their remains in Melbourne on Tuesday night just hours after two significant developments in Laos.
Police reportedly detained eight people from Nana Backpacker Hostel in their investigation into suspicions tainted drinks could be responsible for the deaths of six tourists in the remote tourist town.
Shortly after, it was confirmed a third Australian had fallen ill and was recovering in hospital in a stable condition.
Grieving fathers Mark Jones and Shaun Bowles fronted the media briefly on arrival at Melbourne Airport, thanking people in Australia and internationally for their “amazing” support and praising efforts from the federal government and police.
“We want to grieve. We miss our daughters desperately,” Jones said.
“I was happy to hear that there’s been some movement over in Laos.
“I would continue to urge the Laos government to continue to pursue whomever.”
