BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – The Bowling Green Police Department has begun a new form of outreach in the community through social media in the form of digital ride-alongs.
According to Brad Hogue, the recruiting sergeant for BGPD, the idea came from observing other police departments from across the country.
“Several have done variations of virtual ride-alongs,” he said. “We were just brainstorming one day, and we realized we have a large social media following. We were thinking of different ways that we could reach out to our community and highlight the things that we’re doing.”
Thus far, the agency has shown these ride-alongs through posting pictures to their Facebook stories and describing the types of calls they are responding to throughout an officer’s shift.
BGPD said their goal isn’t to embarrass or degrade anyone that they might come across while in the line of duty.
