BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Better Business Bureau (BBB) wants to warn the public that some people are using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake storm relief images on social media.
The manipulated images have been spreading since Hurricane Helene, meant to prey on people’s emotions.
One of the most popular images circulating was of a little girl, holding a puppy, as she was rescued by boat. This image is fake.
The BBB said AI can create fake storm damage, survivors, and may even show political figures on the scene.
They say the public should only believe images coming from reputable news sources, as scammers may try to use the images for personal gain.
The group is already aware of scammers trying to take advantage after Hurricane Helene, with people claiming to be selling relief materials, shipped by drone, among other things.
