Bessemer School Board Member hints at collaboration with state amid potential takeover [Video]

BESSEMER, Ala. (WBRC) – The future of Bessemer City Schools is still up in the air after the state’s threat to take the system over.

Superintendent Dr. Dana Arreola did not want to go on camera at a Thursday night meeting but did tell WBRC that she plans to share some good news soon. She did not clarify when.

At the meeting, school leaders looked at students’ successes and failures under this board.

The superintendent said it was a regularly scheduled meeting, not because of a possible state takeover.

There was over an hour of data presented. One item that stood out was that the school system had more out-of-school-suspensions this year. This means students were not in the classroom.

Leaders say they did not have as many in-school-suspensions because of lack of funding.
