Benjamin E. Mays Family Center opens in Pacolet [Video]

PACOLET, S.C. (WSPA) – A historic school is becoming a community center in Pacolet.

The Benjamin E. Mays Consolidated School was one of the first schools named after the minister and civil rights leader.

Otis McCollum a member of the Benjamin E. Mays Alumni Association said the school opened in 1953, however, the name was taken off the school in 1970 at the inception of mandator integration.

The school was then converted to the Middle School of Pacolet.

The building has been vacant since Spartanburg School District 3 consolidated middle schools in

In 2023, Spartanburg School District 3 donated the former middle school building, so it could be transformed into what it is now, a new family resource center called the Benjamin E. Mays Family Center.

Doctor Mays was also a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
