Bay City begins demolition for new housing project | Local [Video]

BAY CITY, Mich. (WJRT) – Preliminary blight remediation work began Tuesday in Bay City.

It’s all part of Bay City’s largest affordable housing development in the past 50 years.

The former YMCA Building, the old Bay County Market and two other vacant structures will be demolished, costing $2.1 million.

It also marks the first step in making way for a new $40 million, 104-unit multi-family affordable housing community in Bay City for seniors, people with disabilities and low-wage earners.

“With the latest census results, we are increasing by a few hundred,” said Bay County Executive Jim Barcia. “Also, with the jobs being created, there is going to be a lot of pressure on the existing housing. This $40 million investment will be a major step, and I think alleviate some of the pressure on rental units, lease units and available housing in Bay County.
