Residents are encouraged to take precautions to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A mosquito sample pool collected in Banquete has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to a Nueces County press release.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes such as using repellant containing DEET, wearing long sleeved shirts and pants and getting rid of any standing water to eliminate breeding.

According to the press release, County Vector Control will be spraying outside Banquete city limits and will continue to monitor collected test samples.

This comes after multiple area counties have reported finding mosquitoes carrying the virus in their regions in the last few weeks, and news of the deadly mosquito-borne illness eastern equine encephalitis found in infected horses in Houston on Tuesday.
