Back to School Brighter event helps students get ready for new year [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – It was a big turnout on Wednesday in Springfield as children and their families gear up for the upcoming school year. The day was filled with everything from music and games to free haircuts and school supplies. Families gathered at Third Baptist Church in Springfield for the ninth annual Back to School Brighter Event, where grade-school students could receive free supplies ahead of the new year.

In collaboration with the Back to School Brighter initiative, Pastor Taylon Lancaster and his fellow church members hope the event will not only to get kids excited about the upcoming school year, but also ensure that they are ready and prepared to learn.

“This is bringing the community together, trying to give back to the community,” said church member Devon Mullen.
