Arizona judge delivers harsher punishment for unlicensed midwife [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An Arizona midwife who was caught practicing without a license following the death of a mother and her baby while in her care was hit with a harsher punishment in court on Friday.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled Sarah Kankiewicz can’t practice being a midwife for 20 years instead of the original 15. It was part of a settlement between her and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

She gave up her license to practice midwifery and agree to not to practice any midwifery services for 15 years in June but then was caught providing those services and advertising online that she was still a licensed midwife, prosecutors said.

Someone who performs acts of a midwife without a license is guilty of a class 6 felony.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a complaint on July 30 against Kankiewicz, claiming she violated a settlement agreement, which led to Friday’s new agreement.
