Architects call for more affordable, sustainable housing in pre-Budget submission [Video]

Architects have called for more housing to be built and for high-quality local amenities to be included in new schemes.

In its pre-Budget submission to the Government, The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) laid out a number of targeted actions designed to increase the delivery of affordable housing.

Its key recommendations include better resourcing and empowering local authorities, government departments and state agencies to deliver better housing outcomes.

RIAI would like to see a higher number of architects employed in the design and delivery of public buildings, spaces, and community infrastructure to achieve this.

With greater numbers of architects in public employment, RIAI believes development plans and local area plans will be more “strategic, targeted, and future-proofed to fulfil the needs of Ireland’s growing population.”

The organisation has also called for greater investment in research and innovation to provide quality, affordable housing supported by social infrastructure and amenities.
