Amherst school board votes 4-2 on high school textbooks [Video]

New humanity textbooks for Amherst County High School were approved with a 4-2 vote at the county school board’s May 9 meeting.

Marvin McGinnis, supervisor of innovation, learning and humanities for Amherst County Public Schools, reported to the board the textbooks drew concerns from a community member on what may appear to be controversial topics and how teaching of that content would be presented. The review committee selected the textbook for recommendation because it is aligned with college board expectation and it is “the most conservative” of the books, up to date, and reflects what students will need to be successful in Advanced Placement testing.

Vice Chair Abby Thompson and board member Dawn Justice voted against adopting the textbook. Justice said her concern is not that controversial topics are taught but they should be done in a way that is not “unbalanced.”

“It is a difficult decision,” Justice said.

Thompson said she wishes she could support the textbooks.
