Amherst Presbyterian Church breaks ground on new addition [Video]

In a celebration years in the making, the congregation of Amherst Presbyterian Church broke ground on a new addition to its building on Sept. 6.

The church on Second Street, a close walk from the Amherst County courthouse, was established in 1831 and will construct a new fellowship hall with a kitchen and a few restrooms. Pastor Michael Whorley during the event said the church is embarking on “a great adventure for our future” and the expansion is much needed.

“We have such a small fellowship hall currently that trying to open up for community events and inviting people in for special programs is almost impossible to hold,” Whorley said.

The addition will help the church expand its outreach to the community, will replace windows and improve the heating, ventilation and air conditioning to help the church with its energy costs, he said.
