Amherst Life Saving Crew honored for 66 years of service [Video]

The Amherst Life Saving Crew, which disbanded this summer, was recognized for its 66 years of service to the community during the county board of supervisors’ Sept. 17 meeting.

The organization was founded in 1958 by charter members Harry Wilkerson, Rocky Godwin, Haney Motley, Donald Mays, Wendell Burford, Hugh Garbee, Yale Bruch, Ronald Schrader and J.C. Cash, a commemorative resolution the board unanimously approved states.

The crew was formed to provide primary emergency medical services (EMS) and rescue operations to the north-central portion of Amherst County and the volunteers, in addition to patient care, maintained its buildings, balanced the books, organized fundraisers and ensured equipment was running properly, the resolution states.

Volunteers hold certification as emergency medical services providers for basic and advanced life support by the state and Virginia Department of Health and some are certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, the resolution reads.
