When it comes to washing up, there are a lot of nuances involved.

Are we using a washing-up bowl to conserve water? Are we rinsing the soap off the plates completely before placing them in the drying rack? Or, where there’s the lucky option of a dishwasher, are we binning the whole thing off altogether and shoving everything – even the pans – in there?

But now, the internet has spurred another complication: apparently, people in America are horrified by the way we Brits wash up.

It all began with one viral TikTok from @spiritual_af, who asked her British followers to ‘record’ themselves washing up.

‘Can you show the steps that you take to take a dish from dirty to clean, please? Because I just went down a very strange rabbit hole that I wish I hadn’t gone down and I want confirmation or denial, please,’ she pleaded.
