PEORIA (25News Now) – Billing is paused for all American Water customers after the company proactively took its customer portal service offline following a cybersecurity incident.
According to American Water, which has reach in numerous states including Illinois, the company learned of unauthorized activity in its computer networks and systems on Oct. 3, later determined to be the result of a cybersecurity incident.
The company took its customer portal service MyWater offline in a proactive measure, in an effort to protect customer data.
This means billing is paused until further notice. There will be no late charges or service shut-offs while the portal remains unavailable.
American Water said they are coordinating with law enforcement and third-party cybersecurity professionals to assist with containment, mitigation and an investigation into the nature and scope of the incident.
