ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Obed Vargas could become the first Alaskan to play for a men’s senior national soccer team next week when he suits up for Team Mexico.
Vargas, 19, received a call-up earlier this month to the Mexico Men’s National team for a training camp and a friendly match against the United States on Oct. 15.
“I really felt like I completed my career,” Vargas said in a press release. “Just getting the call-up and knowing that I’m going to be there.
“It just felt like I made it.”
Vargas has become a rising star for the Seattle Sounders since making his MLS debut at just 15 years old in 2021.
This season, he has secured a starting midfielder spot and has tallied two goals and seven assists in nearly 3,000 minutes across all competitions.
