State transportation officials are talking about their plans for dealing with it this season.
Alaskans tuned in online for the 2024 Virtual Snow Summit. Topics discussed included snow management strategies and prioritizing pedestrian and bike routes for snow removal.
Officials also gave an update on a project in the works called the “Winter Operations Dashboard.”
“Not only would you be able to see what the winter maintenance priority for a particular road is the really cool feature of this will be what’s sort of shown there in the lower right, those little arrows. You’ll be able to get a timestamp of the last time a plow had come through that area. So if you’re in the midst of a winter storm, you can o see what’s been plowed,” explained state traffic and safety engineer Pam Golden.
The DOT says if all goes well, the new Winter Operations Dashboard will officially launch sometime in January for Alaskans.
