Deadly Prison Break in Mozambique Follows Election Protests
Maputo, Mozambique – At least 33 people were killed in clashes with security forces following a mass prison break in Mozambique, authorities said Wednesday. Teh escape of 1,534 inmates from a maximum-security prison outside the capital, Maputo, was triggered by post-election protests that erupted on Monday.
The breakout occurred at the Maputo Provincial Penitentiary in Matola, according to Bernardino Rafael, the commander general of Mozambique’s police force. Speaking at a press conference in Maputo, Rafael described the chaotic scene.
“Around 1 p.m. local time, a group of subversive protesters approached the facility, creating a disturbance and demanding the release of the prisoners,” rafael explained.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to a violent confrontation between the protesters and security forces. The exact circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear.
The prison housed approximately 2,500 inmates before the breakout. Authorities are currently working to recapture the escaped prisoners and restore order.
