CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Southwest Side parents and students took their opposition to plans of closing seven charter schools to the Loop Wednesday.
They gathered outside of Chicago Public Schools headquarters with a clear message to Acero Schools leadership: no closures.
“This decision, if enacted, would disrupt the lives of our students and devastate our predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods,” one parent said.
“Shame on you for making this decision without engaging Acero families, your community, your students,” said another parent.
Among the elected officials on hand was 25th Ward Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who called for investigations into Acero officials that have cited dropping attendance in their decision to shut down the seven charter schools.
“We are not going to allow our parents, students, teachers or communities to pay for the consequences of the corruption of these individuals,” Sigcho-Lopez said.
