A collaboration between UMaine and Belfast AHS, students test their underwater sea glider | Local News [Video]

BELFAST — On Friday, June 7th, students and teachers from Belfast Area High School tested underwater sea gliders they built with support from the University of Maine’s Center for Research in STEM Education (RiSE Center).

“It basically has a ballast and it’s a water bottle with wings on it and it’s supposed to float up and when the ballast fills it goes down and it glides forward and backward because there’s no actual propulsion on it,” said Adam Tomalty, a Junior at Belfast Area High School in the Projects and Engineering class. 

“That is controlled by an Arduino micro controller and is controlling a syringe that will allow you to take water in and make the glider less buoyant so it sinks and when the water gets pushed out by a servo motor controlled by the Arduino then that’s going to push the water out and make it more buoyant,” said David …
