New London community moves forward after collapse of historic church [Video]

The former First Congregational Church on Union Street had stood since 1850, but the building’s soaring steeple and roof collapsed a year ago.

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Right behind an iron fence on Union Street stands what remains of an iconic piece of New London history.

One year ago, the former First Congregational Church on Union Street soaring steeple and roof collapsed, leaving a gaping hole in the top of the building. The front of the church was reduced to a heap of rubble. The church had stood there since 1850.

“Like the world sort of went on pause for days afterwards,” said Michael Passero, New London mayor.

Up until a year ago, Passero could simply look upon the church from City Hall where he worked, but that ability is long gone. On that day, Passero was just up the block at a Rotary club meeting when the church collapsed.
